Everyone knows that the best motivator to work hard is high pay. Loyalty, dedication to your own company, sincere love and genuine interest in what you do are all good, of course, but without decent pay, thoughts of changing jobs will appear from time to time. And the greater the difference between the figures of the desired and current salary, the more often this will happen. Even if it seems that right now everything is fine with you – you like the job, the employer is "sweet" and the level of payment is satisfactory, this does not mean that after a while you will not want to receive a few more, because there is never a lot of money. How to approach an employer with this question, choose the right words, explain your position and finally get a raise?
You definitely need to start with a well-prepared visit to your boss. In this case, you don't risk being left with nothing. Therefore, you first need to prepare yourself and, first of all, find arguments why it's really time to raise your salary and why it's necessary. First, try to explain it to yourself. Immediately discard arguments that involve comparing you with your colleagues or even with employees of other firms working in similar positions, as well as changes in your personal life that should not concern the employer. This is unconvincing and will cause some irritation among the authorities rather than a desire to look at you and your contribution to the company in a new way.
Choose more weighty facts, for example, that your qualifications have increased significantly since the last determination of your salary, or that with your current experience you bring much more benefit to the company than before, or that the overall labor market situation in your profession has changed and specialists of your level are much more expensive. In general, why did you decide that it was time for you to raise your salary? Until you convince yourself, you can't go to your superiors with this conversation.
To make the arguments really weighty, back them up with facts, study the vacancies of your profile and salaries offered by other employers, and find statistics on them. Next, evaluate in detail your activities in the company, what exactly you do, what you have achieved recently, how useful you are to the team, down to exactly what percentage of the total profit you contribute.
It would also be useful to assess the financial capabilities of the company, whether it can afford to raise the salary of any of its employees at all, or whether it has been working for almost no profit lately and it is objectively impossible to increase pay, no matter how valuable the employee may be. After assessing the situation, decide for yourself exactly in numbers what kind of payment you expect. An abstract "increase" can result in a plus of one hundred rubles to your current salary – probably, if you decide to have such a conversation, then imagine it a little differently.
After you have decided on your "price", start preparing for the conversation. Ideally, the answer to any question from your superiors should be rehearsed in advance. First of all, this is necessary in order to remain calm throughout the conversation, because an unexpected question can confuse you, turn the conversation completely into a direction you don't need, or even make you lose your temper, which should not be allowed in conversations with superiors, especially on such a sensitive topic. Choose from all the arguments the main one, the one that you will rely on the most.
For example, that a deal concluded with your help brought serious profits to the company, or your analysis helped to avoid unnecessary significant expenses.
Ideally, if the conversation takes place a short time after the event, which you consider your own achievement, then you can use it as a "trump card". By the way, you should not start a conversation with your main argument, leave it at the end of the conversation, usually it is then that something most compelling is required for the interlocutor to agree with you. Just don't try to use blackmail, 90% of threats in the spirit of "your competitor offers me exactly that much and I'm going to go to him" end with the answer "go to him", no matter how valuable you are to the employer. No one likes to be manipulated or blackmailed. If you decide to make beliefs in this spirit, the "competitor" must be real and really ready to accept you, since the probability that you will have to switch to him is extremely high. In the absence of a backup option, threats of this kind can end up leaving you completely out of work.
And one last thing. If you have already decided that an increase is necessary, do not be afraid to talk and wait for the authorities to mark your progress on their own. If your request is really justified and the requirements are not overstated and the current place of work is otherwise satisfactory, it is better to try to explain everything to your superiors, rather than accumulate irritation and secretly browse vacancies. Maybe your boss just doesn't know that something is wrong with you, tell him about it.
